Black Coffee
Black Coffee (Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo) is from Durban, South Africa. He lost the use of his left arm in a car accident at age nine and taught himself to DJ one-handed. He runs his own Soulistic Music label and has spent the last 15 years doing more than anyone else to bring South African house — deep, percussive, rooted in Afro rhythms and township music — to a global club circuit that mostly wasn't looking for it until he arrived. He held a multi-year Hï Ibiza residency, has headlined Coachella and Tomorrowland, and won a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2022 for We Dance Again. The Boiler Room ADE x Bridges For Music session on this site is an earlier document — pre-mainstream reach — and still one of his better-filmed sets. The music he plays is his own genre more than it belongs to any existing one. That's a rarer thing than it sounds.
