Armin van Buuren
Armin van Buuren has been hosting A State of Trance since 2001. Not as a marketing exercise — the show hit over 1,200 episodes by 2025, and he still scripts it himself, records it in his own studio in The Hague, and considers it the primary document of the work rather than a promotional supplement to it. He was voted World No. 1 DJ in the DJ Mag poll five consecutive years (2007–2010 and 2012), which tells you something about where trance sat culturally in that decade. The music that earned it: "This Is What It Feels Like" (Grammy-nominated, 2012), the album In Motion, the ASOT live events that filled the Ahoy and Jaarbeurs and eventually moved to sports arenas. He's a trained lawyer who chose not to practise. He played to 70,000 people at Roskilde and brought a field to a stop with a breakdown nobody saw coming. Those two facts are probably related.
